What it is

Epitalon is four amino acids long: alanine, glutamic acid, aspartic acid, glycine. Vladimir Khavinson's institute in St. Petersburg designed it around 2000 from the amino acid makeup of Epithalamin, an extract of cow pineal glands that the same group had used in patients since the 1970s and 80s. Most claims you read online about Epitalon actually come from Epithalamin studies, which tested a different product.

The headline finding is from cell culture. In 2003 the group added Epitalon to human fetal fibroblasts and reported that the cells switched on telomerase and lengthened their telomeres. In a 2004 follow-up, treated lung fibroblasts made 10 extra divisions past the point where untreated cells stopped, and were still dividing when the experiment ended. A 2025 study from Brunel University in London, an independent lab, saw the same telomere lengthening in normal human cells, and also saw it in two breast cancer cell lines through a different route called ALT.

Human data on Epitalon itself are thin: a 2002 retinitis pigmentosa report, a 2007 report that Epitalon and the extract raised night melatonin in elderly people, a small sublingual study in women showing more melatonin breakdown product in urine, and lab work on blood cells taken from elderly donors. Nearly all of it comes from one research network, most of it is in Russian-language journals, and none of it measured telomere length, disease, or survival in people taking the peptide.

Mechanism

How Epitalon works

What it binds to, and what happens inside the body after that, step by step.

Outside the cell Inside the cell
Target No identified receptor; proposed direct binding to DNA promoter regions and histones

The proposed mechanism comes from the Khavinson group: the peptide is small enough to enter cells and the nucleus, where they argue it binds DNA and histone proteins near gene promoters and changes which genes are read. In cultured cells this shows up as telomerase activation, looser packing of old chromatin, and higher output of the melatonin-making enzyme AANAT in rat pineal cells. No receptor has been identified, and the DNA-binding model rests largely on docking simulations and test-tube binding. A 2003 test on whole rat pineal glands kept alive outside the body found no change in melatonin release.

  1. 1 Enters the cell Short peptides of 2 to 4 amino acids can cross cell membranes; fluorescent-tagged versions reached the nucleus of HeLa cells in culture.
  2. 2 Binds DNA and histones Docking and binding studies suggest AEDG sits on specific short DNA sequences in gene promoters, including near the telomerase gene.
  3. 3 Changes gene activity In old human lymphocytes in culture, tightly packed heterochromatin loosened and ribosomal genes became more active.
  4. 4 Telomerase and melatonin enzymes rise Fibroblasts made telomerase and lengthened telomeres; rat pineal cells made more AANAT and pCREB and released more melatonin.
  5. 5 Proposed whole-body effect The group links these cell changes to slower aging. This last step has not been shown in a controlled human trial.
The research

What the studies show

Human results and animal results are kept apart below. A result in rats tells you a mechanism is plausible. It does not tell you what happens in a person.

C Evidence

In humans, Epitalon has only small studies from the group that invented it: a 2002 eye report compared against conventional treatment, a 2007 melatonin report in elderly people, and a 75-person sublingual study measuring a melatonin breakdown product. None describes randomization or blinding. The telomere and lifespan results are from cell culture and mice, and the mouse lifespan effect was limited to the longest-lived animals, with no change in average lifespan. The often-quoted reductions in human mortality come from Epithalamin, the pineal extract, not from Epitalon.

Gaps in the research

What nobody has measured yet

These are questions the published research has not answered.

  1. 01 Whether Epitalon changes telomere length in the blood or tissues of living people; no controlled trial has measured it
  2. 02 Whether it affects cancer risk in people, given that it lengthened telomeres in breast cancer cell lines in 2025
  3. 03 Half-life, blood levels, and how much survives after injection, under the tongue, or by mouth
  4. 04 Long-term safety beyond 10 to 20 day courses
  5. 05 Whether the results hold up outside the St. Petersburg research network; only cell work has been replicated independently
  6. 06 Effects on sleep quality itself, as opposed to melatonin metabolite levels in urine

Notes
Very short peptides are usually broken down quickly by blood and tissue enzymes. Claims that Epitalon resists digestion and works by mouth come from its developers and have not been tested with blood-level measurements.

No human half-life has been published for Epitalon, so we do not draw a clearance curve. Half-lives quoted online for it are usually estimates from animal data.

Claims checked

What people say online, checked against the studies

Tap a claim to see what the studies found.

The claim"Epitalon lengthens your telomeres."UntestedNobody has measured this in people

It lengthened telomeres in cultured cells in two separate labs. Nobody has measured telomere length in people taking it under controlled conditions. In blood cells from 11 donors treated in a dish, telomeres got longer in 5 and shorter in 2.

The claim"Epitalon cut death rates in elderly people by 28 percent or more."Not supportedThe evidence does not back this

That figure comes from a 12-year study of Epithalamin, the cow pineal extract, not Epitalon. The extract studies came from the same group, were not blinded, and have not been repeated by others.

The claim"Epitalon extends lifespan."MixedSome studies agree, some do not

In SHR mice, average lifespan did not change. Only the longest-lived 10 percent lived longer, by 13.3 percent. There are no human lifespan data.

The claim"Epitalon fixes your sleep by restoring melatonin."MixedSome studies agree, some do not

In a 75-person Russian study, a urine marker of melatonin rose 1.7-fold in women with low output. Sleep itself was not reported as an outcome. In isolated rat pineal glands, a 2003 study found Epitalon did not change melatonin release.

The claim"Epitalon prevents cancer."MixedSome studies agree, some do not

One mouse strain had less leukemia and another had fewer metastases, but total tumor rates did not change in the main lifespan study, and telomerase activation is a known feature of cancer cells. There are no human cancer data.

The claim"Twice-a-year 10 to 20 day cycles are the proven protocol."UntestedNobody has measured this in people

Short courses come from the Russian clinical tradition with the extracts. No trial has compared cycle lengths or schedules with Epitalon.

Untested pairings

Combinations people discuss

These pairings come up often. Almost none have been tested together in a trial, and the evidence note on each says so plainly.

Pineal plus thymus bioregulators

Mirrors the Russian practice of pairing a pineal peptide with Thymalin, the thymus extract.

EvidenceThe combined mortality data (266 elderly people over 6 to 8 years) used Epithalamin and Thymalin extracts, not synthetic Epitalon, in an unblinded study from the developers.

Khavinson short-peptide pair

Both are short peptides from the same group, discussed together for brain and pineal aging.

EvidenceThey were compared side by side only in cell cultures, such as induced neurons from elderly donors. No human study has tested the combination.

Handling

Storage and stability

Dry powder (lyophilized)

No published stability study. Labs generally keep freeze-dried peptides frozen at about -20 C, dry and away from light.

Mixed with water (reconstituted)

No published stability data for Epitalon in solution. Short peptides in water degrade faster than the dry powder, and labs typically refrigerate and use solutions promptly.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Epitalon and Epithalamin?
Epithalamin is a mixture of peptides extracted from cow pineal glands. Epitalon is a single synthetic four-amino-acid peptide designed from that extract. Most of the human mortality and aging data are for Epithalamin, so they do not transfer automatically to Epitalon.
Does Epitalon really activate telomerase?
In cell culture, yes: the original 2003 study and an independent 2025 UK study both saw telomerase activity and longer telomeres. Whether that happens in a living person at the amounts people inject has never been measured.
Is Epitalon legal in the US?
It is not an FDA-approved drug. It was in FDA's Category 2 for compounding from 2023 until April 2026, and in July 2026 an FDA advisory committee voted 7 to 4 to recommend allowing it for 503A compounding. FDA has not finalized that. It is banned in sport under WADA's S0 category.
Is Epitalon safe?
Small Russian studies reported no side effects, but none were large or long enough to detect rare harms, and there are no data on cancer risk. Telomerase activation is a feature of most cancers, and a 2025 study saw telomere lengthening in breast cancer cells, which is why this question stays open.
Does Epitalon help with sleep?
It raised a urine marker of melatonin production in women with low baseline levels in one study. No study has reported sleep onset, sleep duration, or sleep quality as outcomes.
