What it is

Pinealon is three amino acids: glutamic acid, aspartic acid, arginine, usually written EDR. It comes from Vladimir Khavinson's St. Petersburg institute, the same group behind Epitalon, and it is one of the short peptides they call cytogens. The name suggests a pineal peptide, but the research is about the brain: neurons under low oxygen, oxidative stress, and models of Alzheimer's disease.

The best data are from rodents and cell culture. In mouse hippocampal neurons exposed to amyloid, the Alzheimer's protein, EDR brought the number of mature mushroom-shaped dendritic spines back up by 71 percent. In rats, pinealon given to pregnant mothers with high homocysteine produced offspring that did better on a spatial learning test and had neurons that held up better against oxidative stress.

Human data are a handful of small Russian studies in truck drivers, workers in hazardous jobs, and 32 people with organic brain syndrome. They often gave pinealon together with other peptides such as Vesugen, used questionnaires or biological age scores, and did not use placebo groups that we could verify. There is no controlled trial showing that pinealon improves memory, mood, or any brain disease in people.

Mechanism

How Pinealon works

What it binds to, and what happens inside the body after that, step by step.

Outside the cell Inside the cell
Target No identified receptor; proposed antioxidant action and direct binding to gene promoter regions

Pinealon lowers the buildup of reactive oxygen species in cultured neurons, immune cells, and PC12 cells, and reduces cell death in those cultures. The developers also propose that it enters the nucleus and binds DNA promoter regions to change gene activity, based on molecular docking and cell expression studies. No receptor has been identified and none of these mechanisms has been measured in a living human brain.

  1. 1 Reaches the cell As a tripeptide it is small enough to be taken into cells; transport via LAT and PEPT carriers has been modeled but not measured in the brain.
  2. 2 Limits oxidative damage In rat cerebellar neurons, neutrophils, and PC12 cells it lowered reactive oxygen species and reduced necrotic cell death in a dose-dependent way.
  3. 3 Shifts signaling It delayed ERK 1/2 activation and changed the cell cycle at higher concentrations.
  4. 4 Proposed gene effects Docking studies place EDR on promoter regions of genes such as CASP3, SOD2, APOE, and PPARG; serotonin production rose in aging brain cortex cultures.
  5. 5 Protects synapses in models In amyloid-exposed mouse neurons and 5xFAD mice, it prevented loss of dendritic spines. This has not been tested in people.
The research

What the studies show

Human results and animal results are kept apart below. A result in rats tells you a mechanism is plausible. It does not tell you what happens in a person.

C Evidence

In people, pinealon has only small studies from the developers' network, usually combined with other peptides and measured with questionnaires or biological age scores. The specific findings, such as 71 percent more dendritic spines and better maze learning, are from mouse neurons and rats. Calling it a proven nootropic overstates the data by a wide margin.

Notes
Tripeptides are normally broken down quickly by peptidases. Whether pinealon reaches the brain intact after injection or by mouth has not been shown with blood or brain measurements; transport through LAT and PEPT carriers was modeled computationally in 2023.

No human half-life has been published for Pinealon, so we do not draw a clearance curve. Half-lives quoted online for it are usually estimates from animal data.

Dosing data

Doses used in published studies

No human study or approved label has published a dose for Pinealon, so there is no table to show.

Studied doses

No dose of Pinealon has been tested in a published human study or approved on a label. Numbers that circulate online come from animal studies scaled up by guesswork or from sellers. We do not reproduce them.

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: no human safety data, despite a rat study in pregnancy
  • Children and adolescents: no human safety data

Interactions
  • No drug interaction studies exist.
  • Most human reports combined pinealon with other short peptides such as Vesugen, so effects of pinealon alone are not separable.

Claims checked

What people say online, checked against the studies

Tap a claim to see what the studies found.

The claim"Pinealon is a proven nootropic that sharpens memory."UntestedNobody has measured this in people

Memory gains were seen in rats. Human reports used questionnaires and biological age scores in small uncontrolled groups, often with other peptides added.

The claim"Pinealon protects against Alzheimer's disease."UntestedNobody has measured this in people

It protected dendritic spines in amyloid-exposed mouse neurons and in 5xFAD mice. No human Alzheimer's study exists.

The claim"Pinealon works by switching your genes back to a younger state."UntestedNobody has measured this in people

This comes from molecular docking and gene expression in cell culture. It has not been shown in human tissue.

The claim"Pinealon is a pineal gland peptide like Epitalon."Not supportedThe evidence does not back this

Despite the name, it is a synthetic tripeptide studied mainly in brain cells, not a pineal hormone, and it is a different molecule from Epitalon.

Frequently asked questions
What is pinealon used for?
In research, it has been tested on brain cells under oxygen loss and oxidative stress and in mouse models of Alzheimer's disease. Online it is promoted for memory and brain aging, which human studies have not established.
Is pinealon the same as Epitalon?
No. Pinealon is three amino acids (Glu-Asp-Arg) and Epitalon is four (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly). Both come from the same Russian institute and are often discussed together.
Has pinealon been tested in humans?
Only in a few small Russian studies, including 32 patients with organic brain syndrome and groups of truck drivers. None that we could verify used a randomized placebo design, and several mixed pinealon with other peptides.
Is pinealon legal?
It is not approved as a drug anywhere we could verify and cannot be lawfully compounded in the US. It falls under WADA's S0 ban for athletes.
Is pinealon safe?
Small studies reported no obvious harm, but one noted pro-oxidant activity and a drop in a blood stem cell marker. There are no long-term human safety data.
