Peptides for healing: what was tested in people, and what only in rats

If you have a tendon that will not settle or a muscle strain that keeps coming back, someone has probably mentioned BPC-157 or TB-500. Neither has a completed placebo-controlled trial for any sports injury in people. Below is every healing peptide in our database, ranked by the strongest human evidence, with the injury models each one was actually tested in.

The short version
The sports-injury data is in rats. BPC-157 sped tendon, ligament, muscle and bone healing in rats, almost entirely in studies from one research group. No completed placebo-controlled trial has tested it on a human injury.
TB-500 has never been tested in people. The human trials people cite used full-length thymosin beta-4, a 43-amino-acid protein, as a skin gel, eye drop or IV. TB-500 is a 7-amino-acid fragment of it with no published human study.
Skin ulcers are where the human trials are. GHK-Cu and LL-37 creams each had a small positive trial, then a larger trial that found no benefit over placebo.
Nerves are the best human case. In four small randomized trials of people with nerve damage, ARA-290 improved symptom scores and corneal nerve fiber counts. The trials lasted weeks, and pain results were mixed.
None is approved for injury in the US. Not one peptide on this page has an FDA approval for healing. BPC-157 and TB-500 are still not legal to compound, despite a July 2026 advisory vote in their favor.
Banned in sport. 10 of the 11 compounds on this page are prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency, in and out of competition.

Proposed mechanisms

The five repair pathways these peptides are said to act on

Healing runs in overlapping stages: bleeding stops, inflammation clears debris, new vessels and cells move in, and collagen fills the gap. Each peptide is tied to one or more of these steps. A solid pill means the peptide has been tested for a healing outcome in a randomized human trial; an outlined pill means the link rests on animal or cell work.

New blood vessels

An injury heals only as fast as blood reaches it. These peptides raised vessel growth signals in cells and animals.

Cells moving into the wound

Repair cells crawl into the gap by building actin filaments. Thymosin beta-4 holds loose actin and changes how fast that happens.

Collagen and scar matrix

Fibroblasts lay down collagen to close the gap. GHK-Cu raised collagen output in fibroblasts at tiny concentrations.

Nerve repair signaling

ARA-290 activates a tissue-protection receptor built from the EPO receptor and CD131, without raising red blood cells.

Growth hormone and IGF-1

Some peptides raise growth hormone or mimic IGF-1. Raising the hormone in blood has not been shown to heal an injury faster.

Open questions

What the evidence does not show

  1. 1
No healing peptide has a completed placebo-controlled trial for a tendon, ligament, muscle or bone injury in people.

Two BPC-157 trials were registered in 2026, one for hamstring strains and one after rotator cuff surgery. Neither has results.

  2. 2
The rat work for BPC-157 has not been independently repeated at scale.

A 2025 systematic review counted 35 animal studies relevant to sports injuries and 1 clinical study, and found no clinical safety data in humans.

  3. 3
No controlled study has tested BPC-157 and TB-500 together.

The combination sold as a healing stack has no controlled study in animals or people. The only human data is 4 knee patients in an uncontrolled phone survey.

  4. 4
    Long-term safety is unknown.

BPC-157 and LL-37 grow new blood vessels in animals. Whether that matters for an existing or undiagnosed tumor has not been studied in people.

  5. 5
Raising growth hormone has not been shown to heal anything faster.

GHRP-6 and hexarelin reliably raise growth hormone in people. No human study has measured whether that speeds recovery from an injury.

  6. 6
What you buy may not be what was studied.

One seized IGF-1 LR3 vial turned out to be a lab-reagent version with a protein tag. Research-label products are not made under drug manufacturing rules.

Frequently asked questions
Does BPC-157 heal tendons in humans?
It has not been shown. BPC-157 sped Achilles tendon healing in rats, but no completed human trial has tested it on a tendon. The human data is five small studies of about 80 people in total, and the one placebo-controlled trial (in ulcerative colitis) found no clear difference from placebo. A hamstring-strain trial and a rotator cuff trial were registered in 2026 with no results yet.
Is TB-500 the same as thymosin beta-4?
No. Thymosin beta-4 is a 43-amino-acid protein your body makes. TB-500 is a synthetic 7-amino-acid piece of it with an acetyl cap. The human trials for leg ulcers, dry eye and heart attack used the full protein. In a 2026 review FDA found no published study in which TB-500 itself was given to a person, and a 2024 lab study found TB-500 did not speed wound closure in cells; only one of its breakdown fragments did.
Which healing peptide has the best human evidence?
For nerve damage, ARA-290: four small randomized trials found more corneal nerve fibers and better symptom scores after 28 days, though the largest trial was positive at only one of three doses. For skin ulcers, GHK-Cu and LL-37 creams each had a positive small trial and a negative larger one. For stroke and brain injury, Cerebrolysin has dozens of trials with mixed results and is approved outside the US. None has strong human evidence for sports injuries.
Is BPC-157 legal now?
It is still not a legal compounding ingredient in the US as of October 2026. FDA removed it from its list of substances with safety concerns (Category 2) in April 2026 because the nominations were withdrawn, which does not approve it. In July 2026 an FDA advisory committee voted 8 to 6 to recommend adding it to the list pharmacies can compound from, against FDA staff advice. That vote is advisory, and no proposed rule had been published. Products sold online as research chemicals are not approved for human use.
Will BPC-157 or TB-500 show up on a drug test?
Both are prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency at all times. BPC-157 is named under S0 (non-approved substances) and TB-500 under S2 (peptide hormones and growth factors). Anti-doping labs have published methods to detect them and their breakdown products in urine. A research-use-only label does not exempt an athlete.
Are injected copper peptides (GHK-Cu) proven for healing?
No. All of the human healing data for GHK-Cu comes from gels and creams on skin ulcers, and the larger phase 3 trials found the gel no better than placebo. There is no published human study of injected GHK-Cu. FDA flagged injectable GHK-Cu in 2023 for possible immune reactions and impurities.
Should I try a peptide before seeing a doctor about an injury?
No peptide on this page has been shown to heal a sports injury in people, so it cannot stand in for a diagnosis. A sports medicine physician or physical therapist can grade the injury, check for a tear that needs repair and set a rehab plan. If an injury is not improving after several weeks, an exam and imaging tell you more than any compound here. If you are already using a research peptide, tell your clinician, because it can matter for surgery, imaging findings and drug testing.
